we are looking forward to that but in the meantime, so much news to get to this morning beginning with that severe weather, flash flood warnings and watches in effect out in the midwest right now. you know that ginger is tracking it all for us. >> yeah, more than 80 severe weather reports and doesn't count the flash flood warnings or lightning at the freedom tower. always stunning to see that it's the numbers coming out around chicago, parts of indiana. 10 plus inches since midnight. take a look. overnight, highways shutting down just outside chicago. more than 4 1/2 inches of rain fall until just a few hours. thousands of miles west in california, this is what it sounds like inside this. a towering wave of dust known as a haboob rolling across the land near palm springs. visibility near zero in seconds. another haboob in arizona. winds up to 45 miles per hour triggering the impressive rolling waves. back east, more flooding.

e-mails to the families of those american hostages. abc's chief investigative correspondent brian ross tracking late details for us. >> good morning, u.s. officials are saying this morning they believe there are at least three americans currently being held by isis and that with no negotiations under way and after a failed rescue mission, they fear we have not seen the last of this group's medieval barbarism. as the fbi steps up its hunt for the killer of james foley, some former hostages identified him as one of three british citizens the hostages nicknamed the beatles who served as jailers, torturers and executioners for the islamic terror group. >> jim was the subject of repeated physical abuse at their hands. >> reporter: with growing concern about the fate of a second u.s. hostage held by isis, steven sotloff, the secretary of defense said the u.s. would not hesitate to do a second mission. >> we will not relent our

efforts to bring our citizens home and their captors to justice. >> reporter: the mission involved special forces and a fleet of aircraft was launched after it became clear that no negotiations were possible with the isis group which had demanded a ransom of $130 million for the release of foley. >> the fbi didn't take it seriously. we didn't take it seriously. >> reporter: meme involved in the process say hostages from france and other european countries held by isis were set free after ransom papers of about $2 million cash each delivered by middle men from turkey. something the u.s. has refused to consider as a matter of principle. in a final chilling e-mail sent last week to the parents of james foley, isis said, you did not spare our weak elderly women or children so we will not spare yours and that's how the foley parents learned their son was going to be executed. >> unbelievable. >> all right, thank you. defense secretary chuck hagel issuing the strongest

warning yet about isis calling the group a, quote, imminent threat. abc's martha raddatz has more on all this and, martha, what do we know this morning about what military action the u.s. might take? >> reporter: well, robin, there have been nearly 100 u.s. air strikes, fighter jet, bombers, armed drones on isis targets in iraq and they expect many more in the coming days. but u.s. officials also making it clear this is not a knockout blow and they expect isis to regroup. secretary of defense chuck hagel is using that alarming language saying isis poses an imminent threat to every interest we have, whether it's in iraq or anywhere else saying, isis is as sophisticated and well funded as any group that we have seen. they're beyond just a terrorist group. we must prepare for everything and the only way you do that, you take a cold, steely, hard look at it and get ready. very, very strong language,

and abc's steve osunsami there again for us this morning. >> reporter: proving there's nothing to fear each and every one of his doctors, nurses and orderlies giving him a hug good-bye. >> god saved my life. a direct answer to thousands and thousands of prayers. >> reporter: it's a far cry from what the medical team had to wear when treating him for ebola. >> dr. brantly has recovered from the ebola virus infection and can return to his family, to his community and to his life without public health concerns. >> reporter: brantly is finally home after three weeks in the isolation wing of this atlanta hospital where he received an experimental serum, in africa between 60 and 90% of people sick with ebola never make it. more than 1300 have died. >> do not stop praying for the people of liberia and west africa and for a quick end to

this epidemic. >> reporter: his friend, nancy writebol, that's her helping disinfect doctors. >> she's ambulatory and able to care for herself. any illness that puts you in bed for a long time you're not fast at doing anything. >> reporter: on the african continent the disease can causing panic. south africa announcing that citizens from liberia, sierra leone or guinea will no longer be allowed entry into their country and any south africans traveling to the troubled region will face health screenings when they return. doctors say these two missionaries are now cured and if they were to return to work in liberia, they would be immune to this strain of the virus that's causing the crisis there. david? >> all right, steve osunsami, thanks so much. but ken and nancy, these two american, what they did putting their lives on the line for all these patients. glad to see them. amy with the other headlines. good morning. >> good morning, everyone.

we begin with a scare at a small college this kentucky. an ice bucket challenge that took a tragic turn. firefighters were helping the school band with their challenge spraying them with cold water when they were done, four firefighters were shocked as their truck's bucket got near a high voltage power line and one remains in critical condition this morning. there was a big shift in ferguson, missouri, this morning, tensions are easing as protests subside and the national guard begins pulling out. the funeral for 18-year-old michael brown is scheduled for monday. well, a united express flight from columbus to chicago was forced to make an emergency landing in indianapolis after the pilot noticed smoke in the cockpit. everyone on board evacuated safely. well, florida's ban on same-sex marriage has been ruled unconstitutional. that decision says the voter approved ban violates the rights of equal protection and due process. and the army is close to easing up on its controversial tattoo policy.

saga. >> 38 years of public service, i never thought i'd be having to testify in a trial like this. it's difficult. >> reporter: mcdonnell and his wife both facing corruption charges for allegedly accepting lavish gifts worth $165,000 in exchange for promoting business man jonnie williams' company, a man the defense says the former first lady had a crush on. mcdonnell telling the jury he was just promoting business, admitting on the stand thursday his wife had a strong emotional attachment to williams. >> any words? >> reporter: he moved out of the family home before this trial started and is currently living with his priest saying he and his wife don't communicate much. >> they're trying to build the narrative that this was broken and bob and maureen could not have conspired together because they were really not in a functioning communicating marriage. >> reporter: mcdonnell airing the couple's issues on the stand reading this excerpt from a 2011 love letter to his wife "the

speak less than two weeks after nearly dying from a simple sip of iced tea. unknowingly laced with industrial cleaner. >> her memory is taking that sip and mouth and throat being on fire and spitting and gagging and doing everything she could to get it out of her mouth. >> reporter: they're claiming this wasn't the first such incident alleging an employee at the dickey's barbecue pit also burned her tongue a month earlier on the same substance. a degreeser made up of lye. >> to me it means that the company was on notice there was a hazardous substance that wasn't properly labeled or controlled. >> reporter: dickey's restaurant did not immediately comment on the new allegations. harding drafk the tea earlier this month after an employee mistook the substance for sugar accide accidentally mixing it in. the district attorney currently investigating says he will likely decide whether to file criminal charges by next week.

>> our office is treating this with the seriousness it deswerves and we want to do the right thing. >> reporter: dickey's saying in a statement the worker involved in making the toxic tea no longer works for the company. adding the entire dickey's family is saddened by the events that occurred in utah and takes this incident very seriously. >> i want there to be change to whatever extent there needs to be change so this never happens again. >> reporter: for "good morning america," brandi hitt, abc news, los angeles. >> people are watching and we wish her well in her continued recovery. all right, lara. i want to give you some new information we learned this morning. it's about breakfast. so many of you probably eating it as we speak but new research may change the way you feel about that most important meal of the day. >> yeah, all right. let's get some breakfast. >> reporter: it has long been known as the most important meal of the day. >> eating breakfast gives you the strength and energy you need to make it through the day. >> reporter: and a crucial part of losing weight.

but recent studies show breakfast isn't necessarily all it's cracked up to be when it comes to short-term weight loss. one study conducted over 16 weeks finding the ago of eating or not eating breakfast did not have a significant effect on weight loss. for the 300 people who participated, that is. still, some experts say that's no reason to be a cereal killer. >> i always say all meals are important, but if i had to choose the most important, i would say breakfast is the most important because it sets you up for success for the day. >> reporter: registered dietitian carrie glassman says there's a sunny side up to eating that meal, increased focus and energy to suppression of hung their could lead to overeating later in the day. >> when you don't eat breakfast your hunger hormone doesn't have a chance to decrease. even if it's small tiny breakfast, a little bit of calories tell your hunger hormone to pause. >> reporter: the bottom line, don't be so quick to break up with breakfast.

one man convicted of killing his best friend over a girl. this morning, that young woman in the middle of it all is speaking, and abc's matt gutman is here with that story for us. good morning, matt. >> reporter: good morning, robin. well, this is a story of puppy love and mad dog murder, of friendship between two teens and the girl both men loved but one of them was willing to do the unthinkable to get his girl back. a week after that sensational trial we were the first to speak to 20-year-old college student erika friman, the woman at the center of that love triangle. the morning christian aguilar went missing two people showed up at the university of florida police station in september of 2012, erika friman, the hazel-eyed beauty who was current girlfriend and her ex-boyfriend, pedro bravo. >> one thing that i remember thinking that was strange right

when we came in i overheard a police officer saying, oh, this love triangle thing. >> reporter: at the other edge of that, this teen, pedro bravo, was not only her ex but also one of christian's best friends and it didn't take police long to suspect him. was there a moment during that interrogation that you looked at braff so and said, i'm speaking to a murderer? >> i knew certainly after speaking with him for just a few minutes that i was speaking with someone who was trying to be extremely deceptive. >> so deceptive that out of jealousy he tricked aguilar into meeting then drugged him and strangled him in his blue chevy suv in a walmart parking lot. his movements caught on surveillance cameras, his thoughts captured in his journal. >> i am a monster for having hurt chris the way i did. >> reporter: his hatred for his friend fueled by his burring obsession for erika. >> he's going to plan a murder. >> reporter: after killing aguilar, he would dump his body in this wooded wasteland bound and buried face down.

he was considered missing until hunters found aguilar's body. the jury didn't buy the story bravo tried to sell finding him guilty. >> the defendant is guilty of first degree murder, false imprisonment, of poisoning, as charged. >> reporter: at aguilar's memorial site his family wept with tears. >> the name of christian means a gift from god. >> reporter: a gift stripped not only from his loving family but from what have been the love of his life. >> i think we would have gotten married eventually. i used to tell him, the world could end right now and if i'm in your arms, i don't care. >> the aguilars are just now beginning to heal and erika friman is moving on. monday is the first day of classes for her at the university of florida and while he'll spend the rest of his life in prison pedro bravo, that killer, takes with him to prison multiple mysteries, robin. >> thank you. i know you've been on top of

we want to introduce you to an urban cowgirl. a former marine who has been helping kids stay off the streets for three decades by sitting them in a saddle. take a look. ♪ you don't see this every day. two teenage cowboys hitting the streets of hartford, connecticut, on horses but for 17-year-old fred wright staying on a horse is keeping him off the streets. >> when i was growing up, i was definitely on that wrong path. i never sold drugs or anything like that but i definitely had an opportunity to do that. >> reporter: behavior issues forced the young wright to transfer schools several times. he suffered with low self-esteem and lacked hope for his future. but that all changed when he met the woman he calls ma. >> so many call them ma. people ask is that your son? yes. is that your daughter? yes. they're not my biological children but they're my kids. >> reporter: patricia kelly, a former marine and he quest triian helped wright find peace in an unlikely place, on a
